Coordinate Outfits: Choose outfits that complement each other without being overly matchy. Pick a color scheme or a theme that suits the location. I always advise mum to get her outfit first!
Location Considerations: Dress appropriately for the location. For example, avoid high heels if the shoot is on a rough or uneven surface like a dirt road because you wouldn’t really wear that, would you?
Avoid Logos & Busy Patterns: Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns to keep the focus on the people rather than the clothes.
Comfort Matters: Ensure all outfits are comfortable and allow for natural movement. If there’s a lot of sitting or bending, make sure the clothes are accommodating. For the self concious, I always suggest something flowy and loose!
Accessories: Keep accessories minimal and tasteful. They should enhance the look, not distract from it. Lets embrace hats and things that showcase your style.
2. Things to consider
Tan Lines: If possible, avoid getting tan lines before the shoot. If tan lines are unavoidable, consider wearing clothing that covers them or using makeup to even out the skin tone.
Hair Ties: Remove hair ties or bands from wrists to avoid unwanted marks or lines on the skin.
Hair & Makeup: Consider professional hair and makeup if desired. Even a simple touch-up can make a big difference. Ensure hair is styled in a way that stays in place and makeup is natural and flattering.
Photoshop: Small bumps, scratches and things that aren’t permanent can be removed in photoshop, but if your little one or yourself has a large bump or injury that you don’t want in the photos, lets chat and see whether we need to reschedule or if we can choose some clothing that can best cover the wound.
3. Comfort and Health
Hydration: Bring bottled water to stay hydrated, especially if the shoot is in a hot or outdoor location plus offering a drink to toddlers is an easy way to distract them.
Snacks: Have light snacks on hand, particularly for kids or anyone who might get hungry during the session. Avoid foods with colours that might run with drools, haha!
Weather Preparedness: If the shoot is outdoors, be prepared for weather conditions. Bring layers if it’s chilly, or sunscreen if it’s sunny.
4. Tips
Relax and Enjoy: The best photos come from natural interactions and genuine smiles.
Arrive Early: Arrive a bit earlier to settle in and get comfortable, get dressed and let the kids wake up and feel comfortable before the photographer arrives or brings out the camera.
Shoes: Choose footwear that’s appropriate for the location and comfortable for standing or walking, or if you’re like me – go bare footed!
Drinks for the men: A beer in the hand is an easy way to calm a dad down and get him to relax!
